Stephen Sheriff*
Born in the Turks and Caicos Islands, Stephen lived in Jamaica until the age of 10. He started ballet at 11 in Rayleigh, Essex with Vicky French. He was accepted into White Lodge at 13 and subsequently The Royal Ballet at 17 in 1976.
Stephen danced with ‘Ballet for All’ for a year, gaining experience of soloist parts. He left The Royal Ballet in 1982 and went to the Netherlands Dance Theatre. Having always enjoyed working with choreographers, at The Royal Ballet he worked with Sir Kenneth McMillan, Sir Frederick Ashton and at Netherlands Dance Theatre, Jiri Kyliam, Glen Tetley, Rudolf Nureyev, William Forsyth and many others.
Stephen danced in Rambert Dance Company, as it was then called, for Richard Alston in Pinot Lunium and with Scottish Ballet in Peter Darrell’s Cinderella. He taught at the Royal Swedish Ballet, Cullberg Ballet, Netherlands Dance Theatre, Rambert Dance Company and at the National Ballet Spain, before joining Rambert School.
